Bradford County 4-H Clover Corner

October - November 2005

Dear 4-H Families and Friends,

Wow! What a beginning to a new 4-H year!  The Family Enrollment Night in August was a huge success with over 200 in attendance, and several clubs were able to recruit new members for their clubs.  After talking with several club leaders, I am very excited to hear some of the club projects this year – especially those involving community service.  Bradford County 4-H has once again stepped forward to help both hurricane victims and our military.  Kudos to all of you!

The County Council is off to a good start by holding its first meeting in September and holding a successful yard sale that will benefit those clubs that participated by helping set up and sell items.  They are now planning “Club Officer Training”, Oct 17, 6:30pm in Building 3.

As we move through the 4-H year, remember that “4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills.”  In keeping with this spirit, it is important that we all realize 4-H in an informal educational organization and that we are teaching valuable life skills through the many projects our members take.  It is even more important that leaders and volunteers understand they are an important part of that process in helping their members establish project goals and finding ways to help them achieve them.  We need to remember that the process of learning is sometimes more important than the end result.  We also need to recognize our members for even the slightest accomplishment.

With all this said, it is promising to be a very active and busy year in 4-H.  Get involved and enjoy the fun!

Yours in 4-H,

Judy Butterfield, Acting CED
4-H Youth Development Agent III

District V 4-H Volunteer Adventure

October 15, 2005

Building 3, Fairgrounds

8:30am Registration

The District V 4-H Agents are hosting a leader/volunteer training for volunteers in Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Columbia , and Union counties on Oct. 15, 2005.  This is for all 4-H adults and teen leaders.  The cost is $10.00, but the Bradford County 4-H Foundation will pick up the cost of those that register by October 3.

There will be workshops in both the morning and afternoon sessions, as well as lunch provided for all those in attendance.  If you can only attend one or two of the workshops and cannot stay for lunch, we still need you to register.  Forms may be picked up from Kim in the extension office.

This is an excellent opportunity to meet volunteers from our district and see what other clubs are doing.

County Golf Shirts

I have had several volunteers ask me about the green golf shirts.   If anyone wants us to order them let me know by Oct. 17 and we will place an order.  Your cost will be $10.00 with the foundation picking up the balance.  Please call Kim with your sizes by the Oct 17th deadline.  We will order both youth and adult sizes, and the orders must be prepaid.  I will only order the green shirts – if you want the white shirts, you will need to order those on your own.  Again this is a way that your foundation membership is helping promote and market our program.

Club Officer Training

October 17, 2005

6:30pm

The County Council is hosting the 4th Club Officer Training on Oct. 17 at 6:30pm in Building 3.  This workshop is designed to help club officers understand their responsibility better.  The County Council officers will work each group of officers in small groups with a variety of hands-on activities.

All clubs are encouraged to send their club officers to this meeting.  All volunteers are encouraged to stay also.  Please call one of the County Council officers or the extension office for more information.

County Council Update

County Council meets the first Monday of each month at 6:30pm at the Bradford County Extension Office.  Each club can send 3 voting delegates to these meetings.  They plan events such as the Officer Training, Pet Show, Cloverbud Congress and several community service projects. If  you want to improve your leadership skills and have the chance to serve on one of these committees, mark you calendars now to attend the County Council meetings.

On September 17, the annual yard sale was held with 8 clubs participating.  These clubs will each receive approximately $27.00 that will go into their club account.  Thanks for a great job!!

County Events Changes

County Events is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 4, 2006.  Location to be announced.  There is a new 4-H Recognition model that we will begin implementing this year.  The first phase is a new age division for County and District Events competitions. They are as follows:  Cloverbuds: 5-7

Juniors: 8-10, Intermediates: 11-13, and Seniors: 14-18.  This applies to demonstrations, speeches, Share-the-Fun, Fashion Revue, etc.  All club leaders will be getting a copy of this manual in the near future.

The entire focus of this model is recognizing everyone no matter how small their accomplishments, and there will be varied degrees of recognition for different levels of participation.  This will not take effect over night, but will slowly be implemented into the club structure.

Attention Livestock Exhibitors!!

All club enrollment forms must be in the

4-H office no later than October 7.  This date is prior to the mandatory swine (Oct 10) meeting and the mandatory cattle (Oct 13) meeting where you must sign up to exhibit an animal in the 2006 fair.  No enrollment forms will be accepted these nights.  They must be in our office by close of business on Oct 7.    You will receive you 4-H project books on either the 10th or 13th.  Please call us at the office with any questions.

Community Service Proposals

The foundation has set aside $1000.00 for clubs that want to do community service projects.  Maximum any club can ask for is $100.00.  If you are interested in applying for one of the foundation grants to do a service project, please call our office for a proposal form.  We accept these throughout the year.

The Chevron/Texaco State Community Pride Proposals are due into the State 4-H Office (Oct 15th – tentative).  If you want to apply for these grants, please call me for an application form.

4-H Foundation Update

Through our auction in August we raised over $6000.00 that will stay in the county to help enhance club programming and provide scholarships for teen and adult leadership training.  Through this fund-raising effort and private donates, we do not charge for project books and are able to provide full or partial scholarships to camps, Jr. Congress, judging events, Legislature, etc.  To help us with the ever rising cost of events, activities, and club materials, we encourage all 4-H families to join the foundation for only $10.00 per family per year.

Your club leader can get you the forms or you can pick them up at the office.  This $10.00 is a small amount for all of the return you and your child(ren) receive throughout the year.  Please help us help your child by joining the 4-H Foundation today.
