Bradford County 4-H Clover Corner

June - July 2005

 Dear 4-H Families and Friends,

Welcome to summer in 4-H!!!  Plans are popping up everywhere for day camps, summer clinics, and believe it or not preparations for the new 4-H year.  Clubs have been having end of the year parties and recognition programs for their members – what a great way to end the year by recognizing club members for all of the great things they have done throughout the year.

One thing to keep in mind is that 4-H does not end with the fair – there are things going on year round to help 4-H members continue to learn and grow through their individual projects.  Please read this newsletter, check out our new and improved website, or call the office to see what is happening.  Some counties are having livestock shows, or clinics are being sponsored by UF – we can help you find one that fits your interest.

In this newsletter you will find information on the following:

  • Awards and Recognition Banquet
  • Summer Day Camps
  • Volunteer Screening Process
  • Family Fun Night
  • County Council Election Results and Plans

Remember this newsletter is for you and we welcome your input.   And have a great summer.

Yours in 4-H,

 Judy Butterfield, Acting CED
4-H Youth Development Agent III

Record Books Due

June 10, 2005

5:00pm

All record books, community service logs, Honor Roll forms, Outstanding Jr. and Sr. Applications, etc are due on or before June 10.  Remember all record books must have the age appropriate Level Summary in the front.  If you do not have one, please pick them up at our office.  Books will not be judged if they do not have these.

All community service logs must be signed by the appropriate person,  and a copy placed in each project book.

I am still in need of volunteers to judge record books on June 14 at 6pm.  This is an excellent way to learn and understand the whole project book and record keeping process.  Please call Kim if you are able to help judge.  Light snacks will be provided.

Scrapbooking Day Camp Planned

Back by popular demand is the Scrapbooking camp taught by Alice Hendon.  The dates are July 25-28, noon-4:00pm.  The camp will be held at Psycho Moms Scrapbooks (formerly Memory Lane ).  The cost of the camp is $10.00 and limited to 10 campers.  Please call the office to reserve your spot.  For more information call Alice at 352-473-7817.  A supply list will be mailed out prior to camp.

  District Council Officers Installed!

Congratulations go to Abigail Crawford, Amy LaFollotte, and Scott LaFollette.  Abigail was installed as District V President, Amy as1st Vice President and Scott as District Representative to the State Executive Board.  They will meet 3 or more times a year with other 4-H teens from around the state to plan such events as State 4-H Congress, and Legislature.

Volunteer Screening and Selection

All current club leaders have received an e-mail from me addressing this new procedure that will take place later this summer.  ALL volunteers that work directly with a child three or more time in their 4-H clubs, activities throughout the year must complete an application, be interviewed by the 4-H Agent and submit to a local background check before any one can become a club leader or a volunteer within that club.  The mission of 4-H is to ensure that all children are taught in a safe, caring and nurturing environment.  Therefore we will begin the screening process this summer. If you are currently employed with an organization or institution that does background checks, we will need verification.  All information is confidential and will be kept in locked files in our office.

Because this is such a new procedure, I have scheduled three meetings this summer:  June 23, July 19, and August 16 from 6:00pm-7:30pm.  The meetings will be here at the extension office.  All club leaders must attend one of these and any parent or volunteer who is actively involved in club work should attend also.  No longer can anyone come in and say I want to start a club or fill out a volunteer enrollment form without going through this screening process.

Please call Kim as soon as possible with what date you want to attend.  And, if  there are any questions, please give me a call.  We want to provide the best and safest environment we possibly can all children involved.
