Bradford County 4-H Clover Corner

April - May 2006

Dear 4-H Families and Friends,

Change” as defined by the dictionary means “to transform”, “to alter”, “to cause to be different”.  Society is continually changing, and so is 4-H – with the implementation of the new age divisions and the new Awards and Recognition Model that will go into effect September 1, 2006.  To most people change can be scary because it is something new and different from what we may be used to, but change can also (and in most cases) be for the better. The new age divisions will afford more children the opportunity to compete and participate with children and youth with similar developmental skills, and it also will allow more children to be recognized for their achievements throughout the year.  We will be implementing a variety of levels of achievement based on the involvement of the 4-H member.  Elsewhere in this newsletter, you will find several dates where I will be providing training and information on this new system.  All leaders must attend at least one of these sessions.

If you remember last year was also a year of change as we began screening all of our volunteers working directly with youth 3 or more times within the 4-H year.  This was a critical change for all of us. We must be committed to keeping our children safe and provide a safe and caring environment for them.

Change does not take place immediately, but over time.  That is why it is important for all of us to look at these changes in a positive light and realize that we are in the business of developing youth to their full potential and sometimes “change has to happen”.

Yours in 4-H,

Judy Butterfield, CED
4-H Youth Development Agent III

4-H Foundation Update:

Thank you to everyone for helping make our Annual Strawberry Scholarship Auction a huge success.  We set a record with over $7200.00 raised.  Thanks to the “Friends of 4-H (they know who they are) for putting us over the top with the $1600.00 bid!!!!!  This money is used to provide scholarships to graduating seniors who have shown outstanding involvement in 4-H work over their entire 4-H career.

Next time you stop at one of the following to purchase fresh produce or strawberries, please thank them for helping support our local 4-H program:  King’s Country Produce, Buddy and Sandra Norman’s Produce, Wainwright’s, and Mrs.and Mrs. Fred Pendarvis.  Together they donated over 42 flats of strawberries to be auctioned off – so please let them know you appreciate what they do.

Attention Leaders and Parents:

Please mark your calendars for one of the following dates: June 13, June 15, July 6, July 17.  I will be going over all of the new Awards and Recognition forms that will go into effect September 1, 2006.  All club leaders must attend one of these sessions to help with the transition.  I would like as many parents/volunteers to attend also.  Each session will be from 6-8pm at the Extension Office and light refreshments will be served.  Please call either Kim or Laurie and sign up – we will be sending out reminder e-mails closer to the dates.

Annual 4-H Auction

August 5, 2006

6:00pm, Bldg 1

Yep, it is that time again to begin planning our annual fund-raiser.  For those of you new to 4-H, this auction raises the funds necessary to help us operate throughout the year.  These funds go for club supplies, awards, provides training materials to leaders and project materials to 4-H members.  They also provide scholarships for educational trips, etc.

Terry Vaughan has once again agreed to serve as auctioneer for the evening, and we will be selling tickets at $5.00 each for a Chicken and Rice dinner.

The foundation board has been discussing an alternative meal for those who may not like chicken and rice.  The ticket price will allow you one or the other, not both.  More information will be coming later, but please put this date on your calendar.

County Council Update

The next County Council meeting is scheduled for May1, 6:30pm at the Extension Office.  We will be electing officers at this meeting.  To consider running for an elected or appointed office you must first have your parent’s permission and secondly you must let me know of your intent to run.  Being an officer takes a commitment from you and your parents and it takes some work to fulfill the responsibility of that office.

The County Council is responsible for several activities and programs

throughout the year, so planning together as a team is essential to makes these events successful.  I hope several of you will consider running for an office.

Club Corner

Congratulations to. . . . . .

The Senior Livestock Judging team of Abigail Crawford, Dakota Reddish, Ryan Crawford and Lloyd Webb for placing 2nd in the State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest in Gainesville, April 1.  They have earned a trip to represent Florida and Bradford County at the Western Livestock Exhibition in Denver , CO. in November.  WAY TO GO!!!!!

Clover Blossoms:  In February Kristin and Kaitlin Griffis showed their club how to make clover pins to wear.  We did not have a March meeting.  Next club meeting will be on April 11, 2006.

Grits: At our last meeting we met up at the fair grounds. We went over how to present yourself on stage. With the help of Vicki Atteberry we practiced on modeling steps and turns. I was so proud of all the girls that participated in the fashion show. All the girls did such a great job on stage. We were also fortunate to have former GRITS girl Sunshine Atteberry as our MC. As you all know Sunshine is our current Strawberry Princess! We are all very proud of her and her accomplishments.

We had several of our girls participate in the Pie baking contest. They all did a great job with there pies. Special thanks to Emily Riggs And Bailey Creighton for participating in the Table Setting contest. They looked great and so did there tables. Bailey’s theme was Japanese and Emily was Coca-Cola!

Several club members also participated in the Goat Show which also was a great success and we had one member Taylor Wilkins show a heifer! We are in process of planning a Butterfly Garden at Southside Elementary. We are very fortunate to have a Master Garden Mother and Grandmother to help us with our project. If a success we will be going to other schools next 4-H year.

We are still visiting our Grandparents at Bradford Terrace. Some are not doing as well as others, so keep them in your prayers. We have had such a busy month but lots of fun. Looking forward to all the other upcoming events. Great job to all the GRITS GIRLS for the accomplishments they have made so far this year.

Oval: Thank you to everyone for your many thoughts and prayers during my recent illness. I appreciate each and every one of them.
